Lucy Loves: 3 Design Trends I’m Adopting in 2023

One of my favorite things about a new year (especially as we head into Spring) is learning about and immersing myself in all of the new design trends coming our way.

In fact, I think one reason I love design so much is the fact that there are always new ways to evolve, change, and even bring back “older” trends. I’ve always enjoyed change, even as a little girl wanting to move the furniture around in my room for a ‘new’ feel.

What about you? Do you like change or does it make you a bit uncomfortable?

Wherever you stand on the “embracing change radar”, I have good news. The great thing about embracing design trends is that they can be incorporated in so many ways - many of which are far from permanent! So even if you’re not ready to commit to a big sweeping update, there are bite-sized and temporary ways to still give new trends a try in your space.

Now let’s dive in!

Here are 3 Design Trends I’m Adopting in 2023:

GRANDMILLENIAL: When I recently heard the name of this trend for the very first time, I got so excited. One, because it means we’re bringing back some “old” trends (I’m a lover of all things vintage/unique/antique), and two because it means the younger generation is stepping into embracing these vibes. If you haven’t heard of this trend yet, a recent article from My Domaine summarizes it best:

A new wave of design-savvy, nostalgic-natured, and traditionalist-inspired influencers is on the rise, recently dubbed “grandmillennials” by House Beautiful. Pleated lampshades, ruffled linens, needlepoint pillows, blue and white ceramics, and chintz-everything are a few of the items these young traditionalists gravitate towards.

Pssst: If you’re someone who enjoys thrifting, I’d strongly advise you to hit your favorite shops sooner than later. Because chances are, the vintage items gaining popularity through this new (but is it, really?) design trend won’t be on the shelves for long!

HAND STITCHING: This trend easily might be my favorite for 2023, because it can also double as a new hobby! Now, don’t freak out thinking that you need to invest in needle and thread and somehow find time in your day to start hand stitching if you want to incorporate this trend into your space. Keep your eyes peeled, because LOTS of great products incorporating hand stitching like throw pillows, dishcloths, and more are already hitting favorite stores.

If you are excited or intrigued by the opportunity to add your own unique touch to various items with hand stitching, here are a few of my favorite kits/products:

Stitched Stories Embroidery Kits

Hat + Vintage Toppings Kit

Dropcloth Sampler

Adding hand stitching can be a super easy, super affordable way to spice things up in your space. Think about adding a small flower to the corner of a throw pillow, or making a personalized tea towel for a friend. The options are truly endless!

COLOR: Last but not least, COLOR is making a major comeback this year in the interior design world. You see, whites and neutrals have been EVERYTHING for so long, and while they might not technically be going anywhere for good, it has left people wanting COLOR! The great news about this is that even if you’re one of the neutral/white lovers out there, there are SOOO many ways to add color to your space that you can take away or change later.

Adding more “permanent” color to cabinets or walls or committing to some new “pops” with throw pillows or other accessories are just a couple of the many ways to add color. One of my personal favorites (which is also temporary) is to try peel-and-stick wallpaper! There are so many great quality brands out there…not to mention the fun designs and colors!

As you can see, giving one (or all) of these 2023 design trends a try doesn’t mean you have to permanently change anything in your home!

In fact, trends are a great way to try new things and experiment with items you’re drawn to.

Which of these trends are YOU most excited about!?
