2 Quick Questions to ask yourself when making design choices

We’ve all been there – staring at a shelf full of picture frames or rack of beautiful (but oh so different) area rugs, debating between design choices, and feeling overwhelmed by the decision-making process in general. As we’ve been unpacking more about the design process in general around here, you’ve likely heard me talk about this feeling of “overwhelm” which often leads to decision paralysis - and friend, that’s not where we want to be!

Despite the fact that when you log into Pinterest, step foot into Home Goods, or enjoy lunch at Restoration Hardware where the endless array of options are there to captivate you, there are a few simple questions you can ask yourself when making any design decision that will leave you feeling confident about the choice you made. I’ve learned to adopt these questions throughout my own journey, and they have helped me more times than I can count when I felt “stuck” or simply uncertain.

The first question I always ask myself (and recommend you do, too) when faced with a design decision is: “Does this feel authentic to ME?” Now, you may assume that if you like something or it stands out to you in the first place, then it must be authentic to you. But that’s not necessarily true! I can think of a number of times when I was attracted to a design element that while I really liked it, it wasn’t truly aligned with MY true style or vibe.

Imagine you just left a week-long vacation at Alys Beach. After staying in the stunning white architecture filled with minimalist design, the next time you’re out shopping for a photo frame, you might be drawn to one that is reminiscent of a frame that was in your Alys Beach rental home’s bedroom. That style is not only fresh on your mind, but you really do like it! But if you brought it home, it wouldn’t be cohesive with the rest of your space, AND at the end of the day, it’s not cohesive with your bold, funky design style that fills the rest of your home.

See what I mean?

It’s okay (and encouraged) to try new things - especially after you’ve been inspired by another design style or space. At the end of the day, however, what’s most important when we’re faced with a decision is to make a choice that is aligned with our authentic to who we are. Those are the decisions we will feel confident in and enjoy for years to come!

The second question to keep in your back pocket when making design decisions is double-faceted: “Will I still like this in a year, or if not, is it low-cost enough to change?”. I love this question because, to me, it screams freedom! There are certain pieces in my home that have been there since we built it, but there are a LOT of items that I love swapping out on a regular basis! Obviously, when you’re considering a decision like tile for your bathroom vs. a vintage throw pillow - one is much more “permanent” than the other. In this example, the tile is probably something you want to feel certain you’ll still like a year from now. The throw pillow on the other hand was an item you scored for $15 at an antique market - totally low-cost enough to bring home and change (or better yet, move to a different space) if you’re not enjoying it anymore!

Both of these simple yet powerful questions have saved me more times than I can count - especially when I’m in a pinch, and I hope they’ll empower to make decisions with confidence and ease on your design journey!

In closing, can I let you in on something? Sometimes the best decision is no decision at all. Sometimes a simple “pause” is the perfect response - and if you’re still thinking about that piece of artwork one week from now? Probably a sign that it deserves a place in your home. Don’t be afraid to create some breathing room in your mind when making decisions.

At the end of the day, remember this: nothing is permanent, and you’re allowed to offer yourself grace when it comes to designing a space. No matter what, it will be wonderful!

It’s a joy to work alongside incredible people like you to help put the pieces together (literally and figuratively) in creating rooms and spaces that are loved!
